Director of Individual Tax and Cryptocurrency Tax Compliance & Planning
Lorenzo Abbatiello is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) with extensive experience advising clients on tax strategy. As a subject matter expert in cryptocurrency tax and crypto tax planning, Lorenzo is an industry leader.
Lorenzo holds a dual major in Accounting & Financial Market regulation from SUNY Albany in Albany, New York. He began his qualification process for the CPA and achieved his Master’s degree in Accounting and Business at CW Post in Long Island, New York (now part of LIU).
Lorenzo was recruited into KPMG, working in their Long Island and Manhattan offices in New York. Almost immediately passing his CPA exam, Lorenzo worked his way up to Senior Auditor. He worked on financial statement audits of complex companies, including telecom, healthcare, and employee benefit plans. Clients included Cablevision (now Optimum) and Mercy Hospital System, culminating in leading the audit for his alma mater, CW Post.
Lorenzo left KPMG to begin to apply his entrepreneurial expertise to open his family’s restaurant business from the ground up. He learned valuable experience, sitting on the opposite side of the table as a business owner. There was a line around the corner from day one, and the restaurant was an immediate success.
Wanting to further his professional practice, Lorenzo was recruited into private equity consulting as a consultant for Deloitte, working on special projects for Cushman & Wakefield. Initially based out of New York, Lorenzo was responsible for various roles, including setting revenue recognition principles. He later was based in Chicago and San Francisco leading the west coast implementation of Salesforce.
Throughout this time, Lorenzo kept an independent practice servicing firms and their clients with their accounting & tax needs. Wanting to provide more comprehensive solutions for his clients, Mr. Abbatiello returned to public accounting full-time and joined a prestigious Rhode Island-based accounting, tax, and advisory practice as a manager. Combining his expertise in corporate and tax strategy, he quickly became a leader at the firm.
In 2016 Lorenzo became an industry expert advising the firm and its clients on the burgeoning arena of cryptocurrency taxation. In 2018, Lorenzo began advising heavily on Act 20 and Act 22 (now part of Act 60) Puerto Rico tax benefits. He has worked with corporate and individual clients as an expert in the Puerto Rico tax redomicile process. Acting as a concierge to clients in transition, he goes far beyond the traditional Puerto Rico Act 60 tax advisor.
In December 2018, Lorenzo founded Lorenzo Tax with a vision to meet the needs of entrepreneurs and investors with a heavy focus on cryptocurrency taxation, individual tax planning, and estate planning.
In 2021, Lorenzo Abbatiello joined Origins Group, a full-service accounting, tax, and consulting firm that provides a range of services from traditional accounting, tax, and consulting to advanced topics like crypto tax advisory and advanced tax planning.
